The Las Lomas boys volleyball team celebrated its senior players at its last home game on May 11. This final DFAL game was a 3-2 win against Dougherty Valley. Although the Knights won the first game, the Wildcats were able to take the match to five games. The fifth game was extremely close, with the Knights winning 15-13.
“It was the best game we ever played,” said senior Alex Fischer, a team captain.
According to Fischer, freshman Ben Wood and senior Brandon Clarke stepped up to the plate that night and played well.
The team was a blocking machine, with nine point-winning blocks in the first two games alone.
On May 7 the Knights won 3-1 against Antioch, rebounding from a tough loss to Campolindo on May 2 when the team failed to win a single game.
This year, the team qualified for NCS, which was a significant improvement from last year.
According to junior Arman Lim, nobody expected the Knights to make it to the second round of NCS.
The Knights had their first NCS game against Redwood on May 16, emerging victorious in a four game match, 26-24, 13-25, 25-20, 25-21.
“We won because we wanted it more,” said Fischer. “We finally started playing together and running more complicated plays.”
On May 18 the Knights lost to Drake in an intense five game match, 2-3. Drake was seeded first in NCS, and the Knights gave them a run for their money, with the first two games separated by only three points.
The Knights ended the season with a 19-16 record, a significant improvement from last years record of 9-23.
This season’s success gives the team high hopes for next year.
“Next year, we will have a lot of returning talent,” said Lim. “The freshman this year are talented and the juniors who are going to be seniors have a lot of talent as well. I’m excited.”
